Trusted Insights for What's Ahead®

  • Labor market dynamics were little changed from April to May.

  • Payroll rose for a third consecutive month with job creation concentrated in a relatively narrow set of industries while hiring elsewhere was flat.
  • Most payroll gains were in healthcare, leisure and hospitality, and local government, sectors that have consistently driven hiring over the past year.
  • Temporary factors may have also boosted payrolls this month, including calendar-related effects in education and seasonal hiring patterns.
  • Outside of these sectors, hiring momentum was subdued, suggesting that labor demand is not broadening materially across the economy.
  • The unemployment rate was unchanged, indicating that the labor market is neither deteriorating nor reaccelerating in a way that would raise concerns about overheating.
  • Given today’s data, the Fed is likely to remain on hold at its June meeting. The report also supports removing the easing bias from the FOMC statement.
