Crystal Ashby, Interim President and CEO of The Executive Leadership Council, talks about the fractured social state of the country and how the death of George Floyd has shifted the public’s awareness of what it means to be black in America.
In a discussion with Dr. Lori Esposito Murray, President of the Committee for Economic Development at The Conference Board, Ashby challenges CEOs to enhance their own personal experiences and understanding by engaging with black executives and peers about the role that racism has played in their lives. She goes on to talk about the importance of investing in the long-term growth of black talent within an organization as critical to creating sustainable change within a company’s culture.
“We have seen a lot of organizations make amazing statements publicly. We have seen a lot of organizations invest a lot of money,” said Ashby. “The question becomes ‘what’s happening inside the walls of your organization? What is your black talent experiencing?...When do they feel like they belong? Do they feel like they have an ability to succeed? Do they look up and see people like them so they know it’s possible?’”
