Total CEO compensation in the Russell 3000 increased in 2016, marking the seventh consecutive year of growth. The median total compensation for the CEO of a Russell 3000 company was $3,843,380, 5.9 percent higher than in 2015 and 54.8 percent higher than in 2010. In S&P 500 companies, the median total CEO compensation was $11,472,740.
This report benchmarks individual elements of compensation packages and the evolving features of short- and long-term incentive plans, details shareholder advisory votes on executive compensation (say on pay), and outlines the major practices on board oversight of compensation design.
The 2,499 companies in this study were registered with the SEC, included on the Russell 3000 Index as of May 2017, and filed their proxy statements from January 1 to June 30, 2017.
