Modernizing Health Programs for Fiscal Sustainability and Quality

November 20, 2024 12:00 PM - 01:00 PM ET

Medicare and the other major Federal health programs are crucial pillars of the American health care system, providing health care to millions of Americans. Fiscal and demographic challenges threaten the financial sustainability of Medicare, requiring a broad effort to modernize the program. Innovative strategies, including value-based care and alternative payment models, have shown promise in reducing health care costs and improving the quality of care for patients.

To realize the full benefits of these strategies will require investments in workforce and data infrastructure, along with sustained stakeholder engagement and regular evaluations of progress. Policymakers have other tools to tackle Medicare’s negative financial trajectory as well. Congress must work in a bipartisan manner to consider and evaluate these potential reforms to ensure the continued financial viability of the Medicare program for future generations of Americans.

By attending, you will learn:

  • How the fiscal and demographic challenges that Medicare faces threaten the solvency of Medicare’s Hospital Insurance Trust Fund.
  • What policy options Congress may consider in a bipartisan manner to address these challenges, including reforms to Medicare Advantage; adjustments to premiums, cost-sharing, and prescription drug payments; and emphasizing primary care and care coordination.
  • How innovative strategies like value-based care and alternative payment models can realign incentives to reduce costs and promote higher quality care through a patient-centered approach.
  • What investments are needed to realize the benefits of these strategies.
