There was little new or surprising information in today’s FOMC statement, save a growing consensus around only one interest rate cut in 2026.

There was little new or surprising information in today’s FOMC statement, save a growing consensus around only one interest rate cut in 2026.

Trusted Insights for What’s Ahead®

  • The Fed held monetary policy rates steady and maintained one rate cut at some point this year.
  • Only one governor dissented–Governor Miran, favoring a quarter point interest rate cut–as Governor Waller joined the others in keeping rates unchanged in March after calling for a cut in January.
  • The Summary of Economic Projections (SEP) revealed that several Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) participants reduced their preferred number of cuts in 2026 from two to just one, shifting the consensus further towards continued mild constraint.
  • The Conference Board anticipates at least one policy rate cut this year, if any, which may be determined by the duration of the oil price shock.
