As part of their roles and responsibilities, chief sustainability officers (CSOs) primarily focus on environmental (“E”) issues, followed by social (“S”) and governance (“G”) topics. While their attention to all areas has increased over the past five years, the focus on the environment has experienced the most significant growth, according to a survey by The Conference Board of 104 US-based sustainability executives.
While companies’ focus on environmental issues grows, they should ensure their CSOs and sustainability teams are equipped to address them. This is especially important since 87% of survey respondents expect the CSO’s responsibilities to increase in the next three to five years in response to a growing number of sustainability disclosure regulations, stakeholder pressure to address ESG issues, and the drive to integrate sustainability deeper into the business, among other factors.
