Given that health care expenditure accounts for nearly 19% of US GDP and that health care activities contribute to more than 8% of domestic greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, the health care industry can be an important player in the sustainability transformation of the US economy. This report, first in a series that will address the sustainability transition by industry, provides insights on how and why health care providers, in collaboration with other stakeholders, can improve their sustainability performance to mitigate risks, lower costs, and enhance resilience.
