Chief human resources officers (CHROs) have long been experts in change management and organizational dynamics—now, it is time to apply those skills to sustainability. By driving internal collaboration, accountability, and buy in, CHROs can embed sustainability deep in the business and reinforce it as a core strategic and cultural pillar.

A recent survey of Europe-based human capital and sustainability executives from The Conference Board, alongside qualitative interviews with top regional human resources (HR) leaders, underscores this opportunity. The findings are clear: if businesses put sustainable transformation at the heart of their growth strategies, CHROs need to play a major role. The Conference Board defines sustainable transformation as the transition to integrate a company’s sustainability strategy into its operations, products and services, and organizational culture, while coordinating efforts across multiple functions.
