A presidential proclamation issued this month called out the power of small businesses in America by declaring May 4 through May 10 National Small Business Week.
Perhaps this is not a new idea—see Small Business Saturday—but it has new impetus at a time when small businesses in particular face big challenges and need help. The proclamation describes these challenges as “unprecedented”—inflation, regulations, federal spending, and a “broken global trade system”—and refers to the way the new administration will create a “new era of opportunity” filled with “pro-growth policies.”
The United States has 33 million small businesses that employ 61.7 million Americans—nearly half of the private-sector workforce—and create almost two out of every three new jobs in the country.
