The Paris Climate Accords and the United Nations’ new Sustainable Development Goals are positive signs that sustainability is moving to front and center in global consciousness. But a dangerous paradox continues to undermine the sustainability efforts of business. As we try to pull the world out of poverty, we simultaneously set the stage for the kind of increased consumption that threatens the environment and the population. The solution: adjustments to our infrastructures and a new definition of “growth” that doesn’t simply mean “selling more product.” In short, we need sustainable innovations that also drive business growth.
