Advances in information and communication technology (ICT) have greatly contributed to productivity increases in advanced countries over the past decade, but the recent decrease in the rate of growth, especially in non-manufacturing industries, suggests that ICT’s impact may have peaked. Slower productivity gains in advanced European nations have eroded their positions relative to the United States. Recent data suggest that large productivity gains in emerging economies may not be sustainable.
