Decarbonizing the economy will depend on the further adoption of renewables and improved energy efficiencies. However, there is a need for storage and consistent baseload power due to the variability of solar and wind. Small modular reactors (SMRs) could allow for a distributed energy system that has high-capacity utilization, lowers the need for transmission infrastructure, and is potentially safer than traditional nuclear power plants.
