Because it’s The Conference Board and it has the reputation it has, you really pay attention to the content and the presenters. If you’re going to spend two or three days out of the office, it needs to have that value, and The Conference Board does. The pre-conference was really focused, with spot-on studies. Anytime you have a business leader talk through his/her challenges and how he/she applied them, from the very basic to the in-depth, that’s invaluable. I’m a big networker. I would never hesitate to call on somebody I met at a conference. At the table, we’ll be discussing a presentation or an issue and someone will say, “I’m going to try and do something new— can I call you and talk about your experience?” I can also see that you take attendee feedback seriously and make continuous improvements.
I’ve been to many conferences, but this is exceeding my expectations. The weight that The Conference Board has brings a different group of people. There’s higher-level thinking here, and there are different levels of proficiency which is key. It’s about meeting people where they are. This is a topic that I’m passionate about. I already have a list of ideas to bring to our CEO. The level of learning at The Conference Board is much higher. It’s the right combination of experts and practitioners. If I just wanted case studies I could go elsewhere. Here I get both.

There have been some really good insights and tactical people. It’s grounding to hear from other professionals and learn how they’re dealing with the same issues I have. But the great moment of this conference for me was hearing a former CEO talking about succession management from a business and not an academic perspective. I’m a generalist. This conference allows me to stay up to date with best practices, plus the networking piece lets me connect with leaders in the field. Already, I’m connecting with folks at this conference and setting up conference calls for later. One, the subject matter is critical. Two, the benchmarking is extremely valuable. And three, the networking is tremendous. You get to see cutting-edge leaders who’ve done well in other industries and they’re being transparent and sharing their issues and their solutions. There’s an intimacy here that allows for that sharing. And the sharing of materials after the conference helps to create a forum. It encourages us to link with each other to continue the conversation that started at the conference. The conference is a good mix of professionals: operational, C-suite, board level. Because the reality is that we deal with all these levels.

I’ve loved the lab sessions so far. I go to a lot of diversity conferences, workshops, and trainings, and this is the only one where the cohort is small enough where we can really dive in on specific questions on both the strategy level and the tactical level of the work that we do. That’s not something you often get to do. Most of our teachers at these sessions are practitioners, so we can really drill into specificities on what they do in their own companies. I find that aspect especially useful. I think, long term, I will definitely stay in touch with these folks, in my Lab cohort. The instructors and facilitators—I’m planning on staying in touch with them for sure. When we found out about my company’s membership with The Conference Board, suddenly there were all these resources on diversity that were really useful to us.
