Aviation accounted for roughly 2% of all annual global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in 2022. While historically this sector has been viewed as hard to abate, sustainable aviation fuels (SAFs) have the potential to reduce emissions by replacing conventional jet fuels with alternatives with a lower carbon footprint. This article assesses the outlook for the global use of SAFs, the technical and economic limitations of these fuels, and the barriers to viable decarbonization of the aviation sector.
