Trade relations broke down as Canada and the US ended formal USMCA negotiations and instituted tariffs on a variety of goods covering about $40 billion in trade (US$20 billion of products imported into each country). With duties levied on 5-6% of annual bilateral trade as relations degrade, and nonrenewal of the USMCA, businesses face higher costs, increased uncertainty, and supply chain fragmentation.
