In 2012, a Stewardship Code was adopted in the United Kingdom on a “comply or explain” basis. It applies to firms who manage assets on behalf of institutional shareholders such as pension funds, insurance companies, investment trusts, and other collective investment vehicles. The Stewardship Code is intended to “protect and enhance the value that accrues to the ultimate beneficiary,” and it spells out the terms of shareholder/corporate engagement. This webcast explores how the code works for investors, the responses to the code by corporations, and the code’s applicability to the more general framework for shareholder engagement in other countries.
