Product stewardship and regulatory affairs (PSRA) is evolving from being primarily a compliance-driven function into a business-driven, strategic one. As the responsibilities and expectations placed on the PSRA function expand, success requires a mixture of strong technical competencies—the “hard skills”—and “soft skills,” which range from project management to communication to collaboration. The ability to lead and inspire others is becoming fundamental to success. These changes require a re-branding of the function and the development of clearer career paths for PSRA professionals.

In Building an Effective Product Stewardship and Regulatory Affairs Organization: Using Proven Talent Management Practices to Attract, Develop, and Retain Professionals in This Emerging Corporate Function, The Conference Board Product Stewardship and Regulatory Affairs Council identifies nine drivers of global change with a direct impact on the function and skills needed for success, and also provides a roles matrix with the intent to:

  • build consistency in standards and expectations across PSRA positions globally;
  • develop a more common language for the profession;
  • present basic guidelines to those in a position to hire and manage talent; and
