Tentative Labor Agreement Eases Supply Chain Concerns at West Coast Ports

The year-long negotiation of a new contract between dockworkers at West Coast ports and employers ended in a tentative agreement on June 14, signaling continued relief for US and global supply chains. 

  • Dockworkers had been without a union contract since July 2022 with negotiations growing contentious on how to distribute pandemic-era record profits, which have moderated in recent months as supply chain stresses recede.
  • The White House intervened in the negotiations with Acting Labor Secretary Julie Su helping to broker the surprise deal, despite analysts’ expectations the two sides remained far apart.
  • The agreement helps to continue easing global supply chain pressures, which stood at a nearly 25-year low in April ahead of the deal
