Building Leadership with Skills-Based Volunteering: The Nonprofit Opportunity

Pro bono service is increasingly recognized by companies as an effective tool for executives’ leadership development, but the benefits accrue also to the nonprofit participants. Nonprofit employees who work with pro bono service volunteers typically collaborate and drive results across three stages of a project: strategic planning, volunteer training and management, and monitoring and evaluation. These projects expose nonprofit participants to new experiences with diverse people, encourage creative problem solving, and enhance communications skills. More nonprofits should use pro bono service to develop future leaders, while companies should understand and promote the additional benefits that their volunteer service provides to nonprofit partners.
