Action: The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced the reversal of recently implemented regulations on maximum contaminant levels (MCL) of four of six “forever chemicals” (PFHxS, PFNA, HFPO-DA, and mixtures containing two or more of PFHxS, PFNA, HFPO-DA, and PFBS) found in drinking water. MCLs for two other common contaminants, PFOA and PFOS, will remain in place with extended compliance deadlines by two years to 2031. These standards were established in April 2024, and included a three-year initial monitoring period prior to meeting the five-year deadline for compliance. Administration officials argue that the updated standards will provide greater regulatory flexibility for water systems and reduce the cost of water bills while still protecting public health and allowing the EPA to enforce existing standards.Key Insights
