Action: The US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) will convene an independent panel of health experts to make a new recommendation on putting fluoride in drinking water. The Environmental Protection Agency will also review new scientific information on the potential health risks of fluoride in drinking water in coordination with HHS. Fluoride has been added to drinking water since the middle of the twentieth century, beginning in Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1945, to prevent tooth decay in the population. HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. opposes the addition of fluoride to public water systems, claiming that water fluoridation at US levels is associated with numerous health issues.Key Insights
