Only half all Americans in 2005 said they were satisfied with their jobs, down from nearly 60 percent in 1995. The largest decline in overall job satisfaction occurred among workers ages 35 to 44 and among households earning $25,000 to $35,000. Rapid technological changes, rising productivity demands, and changing employee expectations contributed to the decline. Employers with happy workers emphasize the importance of the work they offer; engage employees through communications; invest in training; realize that recognition is as important as money; and understand that employees have lives outside of work.
