“Innovation is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration.” This adage certainly applies to the work of enabling an innovation to deliver its desired value for your company. It goes (way) beyond mere technical or consumer creativity: the long road from conception to execution with excellence requires multi-faceted contribution from a variety of functions.

Companies that leverage their full innovation potential are those that pull a variety of competencies from across a broad range of the organization. We have identified twelve relevant competencies of leveraging innovation, including the obvious skillsets of “creativity” and “STEM,” but also “adaptability,” “autonomy,” “dealing with external consumers,” “enterprising,” and “handling conflicts.” 

We have extracted a new metric from this analysis: “The Innovation Potential of Occupations (IPO) Dashboard.” This metric can help leaders identify and choose the right players from the appropriate functions to join their multi-functional innovation teams and increase their chances of success.

So leaders, as you refresh your efforts to bring thought diversity to your teams, you will simultaneously be investing in a more inclusive culture of innovation for the long run—and breaking through historical silos as appropriate.
