The business of doing business affects the larger society. If all commercial decisions had an indisputable social benefit, choices would be easy, but sometimes trade-offs have to be made. Corporate social responsibility, however, should not be seen as a soft issue. To the contrary, it is central to doing business. Many companies already share this view, but businesses must also do more to demonstrate that they are socially responsible, culturally sensitive, committed to diversity, and honestly governed. This is not only vital for business but also for those in developing countries.
