The Conference Board CEO Challenge® 2016: General Counsel Strategic Implications

Businesses are facing a challenging risk and regulatory environment, and there are pressing concerns about talent and human capital-related issues from recruitment and retention to building personal resilience within the workforce and nurturing the next generation of business leaders—which is a challenge for general counsel in itself. This report encapsulates results from our annual CEO Challenge survey and presents them in the context of the legal function.

CEO respondents are also placing emphasis on accountability at the top and bottom of their organizations while putting teeth into their organizations’ sustainability performance. The inclusion of sustainability-related goals in both corporate strategic objectives and individual performance goals are top sustainability strategies. For those doing business in China, new environmental laws will place an even greater burden on general counsel to improve environmental records and reporting.
