The very definition—and value—of secret information is constantly changing, says former CIA agent J.C. Carleson in this adaptation from her book Work Like a Spy: Business Tips From a Former CIA Officer. With the end of the Cold War, she writes, spy tactics trickled into the business world, and many executives were caught unawares. Today, state secrets are no longer the goal of choice for entrepreneurial spies; the spy game has now shifted toward private industry. The reason is simple: money. What this means is that executives who would never have feared being targets of corporate spies may very well be.
