Environmental, Health, Safety, and Sustainability Governance: What a Difference a Few Years Can Make

This Council Perspectives was authored by The Conference Board Chief Environment, Health, and Safety Officers’ Council.

The Chief Environment, Health, and Safety Officers’ Council survey results show that executive management attention and funding for environmental, health, safety, and sustainability (EHS&S) governance have grown markedly during the past three years (2008-2010).

The three-year period the survey covers represents a time of massive financial challenges globally; thus, the growth in attention given to EHS&S during this time for companies and their managers takes on even greater significance. Key findings include:

•    A surge in attention to sustainability
•    Growth of conventional environmental, health, and safety governance
•    Expanded oversight for EHS&S by the board and C-suite
