Institutional investor assets are estimated to have risen to $24.1 trillion in 2005 (the latest year that data was available for this report), up from $7.6 trillion in 1990 and $19.7 trillion in 2000. They also accounted for 61.2 percent of total U.S. equities in 2005 and an even higher percentage—67.9 percent—of the ownership of the largest 1,000 U.S. corporations. In Europe, as well, as countries move from debt to equity as a means of financing, the power of institutional investors continues to grow.
