GDPR may turn out to be the four-letter acronym of 2018. The Global Data Protection Regulation will redefine what organizations do with massive amounts of data for years to come.
While the new regulation will create challenges in compliance, it will also bring about opportunities. Those opportunities include solutions that enable a more responsible and transparent way to manage data about individuals and services that intermediate data exchange. More important, GDPR has a chance of bringing trust into relationships that have been eroding in the wake of a variety of case-in-point scandals such as Cambridge Analytica, Equifax and countless other data breaches. The timing couldn’t be better because we are rapidly approaching a future where our digital exhaust is growing exponentially long with the number of devices, censors and augmentations we are willing to carry and even embed into our lives and even our bodies (nightmare scenario: a brain implant that is hacked).
