China Center Research Brief: Communist Party Control of China's SOEs Clashes with EU Regulations

While most eyes are now focused on the rapidly escalating trade frictions between Washington and Beijing, the European Union is undergoing a similar rassessment of its trade and investment policies towards China. In this China Center briefing paper, we examine how the politicization of the Chinese economy and China’s focus on “comprehensive national security” under Xi Jinping is forcing many EU governments to fundamentally question how open they should be to Chinese investments.
