“We are going digital!” “We are adopting agile!” How many times have you heard these statements and thought about what those buzzwords really mean? Technology is not only invading our lives but also cluttering our language. At the core of it, however, is the speed of change.
This is nothing new. As economist R.J. Gordon outlines in The Rise and Fall of American Growth, in the early nineteenth century, the idea of speed was defined by horses and the rhythm of the days was dictated by the rise and fall of the sun. Then, over the course of just a few decades, electricity brought light into the evenings, railroads altered the idea of distance, and the telegraph and telephone reduced the power of physical distance. By the early 1900s, people were empowered to be in the driver’s seat (literally) controlling the speed themselves.
Today’s information revolution is breaking down speed barriers again. Information flows freer, unencumbered by intermediaries who once hoarded and controlled it. The revolution is democratizing knowledge and shrinking the world. It caters to a singular human with unique needs, wants, preferences, behaviors, experiences, a human on the information highway, who is yet again empowered to be in the driver’s seat.
