The United States is in the midst of several large demographic shifts that will alter the business landscape. These shifts will leave a lasting impact on the entire economy. Since consumer spending accounts for nearly 70 percent of the US economy, the changes in consumer demand that accompany demographic shifts will have a disproportionate impact.

Starting last year and continuing into 2018, we are studying the impact of these demographic shifts on consumer spending and behaviors. The size and nature of consumer demand is driven by key factors that are highly forecastable. Through an evaluation of the size of the future population, its age and race/ethnicity distribution, and how spending patterns change across consumer groups, we provide perspective on how population growth trends are likely to impact future consumer spending.

Below, you can learn how these shifts are likely to impact your business: which products and categories will thrive, and which will be left behind, as the face of the US consumer changes over the next decade.
