Since the onset of the Reform and Open, in the early 1980’s, relations between the U.S. and China had become increasingly active and intense. Starting with Xi’s rise to power in 2012, they appear to have taken a turn for the worse, and since Trump’s involvement in 2016, they have deteriorated even further. Views among China-watchers differ as to why. By understanding the extent to which the relationship has been consistent and the extent to which it has evolved, we can more easily and accurately predict the future and chart an optimal course.
