Publication: Corporate Political Activity: Addressing Rising Risk in the 2022 Midterm Election Year

Corporate political activity has been under the microscope – not just in the wake of the January 6th riot, but because of increased focus on a range of social and environmental issues by investors, employees, and the media. Companies have responded, but their work is not yet done. This roundtable focused not just on what companies have done in 2021, but what they saw on deck for 2022. We addressed:

  • How is the environment for corporate political activity evolving at the federal, state, and local level: regulations and enforcement, stakeholder expectations, media scrutiny, and even the receptivity of policymakers to receiving corporate contributions?
  • How is PAC giving evolving, in terms of governance, criteria and process for giving, etc.?
  • What other steps have companies taken, and are planning to take with corporate lobbying, support for third party organizations, and contributions by corporations and executives to align them with company values?
  • Given the heightened scrutiny, and the level of change in corporate political activity underway, what are companies doing to increase engagement and education with their board, investors, employees, and policymakers themselves?
