Josh Akbarhas been the General Counsel for Genworth’s flagship long-term care insurance business since joining Genworth in February 2017. In that role, Josh supports both Genworth’s legacy long-term care insurance business, and its new CareScout Insurance Company. Josh and his team partner with the business to provide creative, practical legal and regulatory advice on all aspects of the long-term care insurance product, including product development, claims administration, customer service, in-force policy management, premium rate adjustments and corporate insurance regulatory matters. Josh also plays an integral role in representing Genworth’s interests in litigation and other forms of contentious disputes affecting Genworth’s long-term care insurance business. In addition, Genworth’s Special Investigations Unit, which investigates suspected insurance fraud, reports to Josh.

Josh reports directly to the Executive Vice President and General Counsel for Genworth Financial, Inc.

Prior to joining Genworth, Josh was a partner at the global law firm Dentons, where he focused on complex insurance litigation and class action defense for nearly 15 years in the firm’s New York and Phoenix offices. Josh was deeply involved in the long-term care insurance industry for his entire career in private practice. With clients including Genworth and other large insurance companies, Josh was a highly sought-after advocate and counselor on long-term care insurance premium rate increase, claims and risk management issues. Josh successfully litigated several of the key cases that helped shape the legal landscape of the industry.

In 2018-2019, Josh participated in Genworth’s inaugural class for the Global Leadership Program through the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth, a nine-month program with a combination of classroom and experiential learning in the United States, India and China designed to strengthen a leader’s ability to “Discover and Create the Future.”

Josh graduated summa cum laude from Arizona State University in 1999 with a Bachelor of Science in Economics and a minor in Political Science, and from the University of Pennsylvania Law School with a Juris Doctorate in 2002.
