James Garvie leads multiple HR functions at Southern Company, including Total Rewards, Workforce Intelligence/Analytics, the HR Technology functions, and HR Operations. James’ role includes strategy development, plan and policy design, management’s liaison with the Compensation Committee/Board-of-Directors, and on-going administration of HR Programs. James began his career with Southern Company at the beginning of 2012.

Prior to joining Southern Company, James was a Director with the Alexander Group, a management consulting firm. During his tenure as a management consultant, James advised many of the Fortune 500 companies, across a variety of industries, on management issues such as operational efficiency / productivity, sales strategy, sales force effectiveness, go-to-market structure/design, and sales compensation.

James spent several years prior to consulting, in a leadership position with BlueLinx / Cerberus Capital (formerly Georgia-Pacific Building Products), managing aspects of sales strategy, sales operations, sales force effectiveness, human resources, payroll, and HR Information Systems.  Prior to BlueLinx, James worked for Georgia-Pacific where he held various analytical positions in accounting/finance and the compensation functions.

James received his Masters of Business Administration degree from Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois and received his Bachelors of Finance degree from the University of Incarnate Word in San Antonio, Texas.

James is a native of Scotland and now resides in Atlanta, GA with his wife Jeanine and their two children, John and Grace.
