The Conference Board
Sophia A. Muirhead is senior vice president, general counsel, and corporate secretary of The Conference Board. She is the first general counsel in its 100+-year history. She is also the program director for the Senior International Attorneys Council.
Muirhead is a member of The Conference Board’s Executive Committee, with primary responsibility for providing senior management with effective legal advice on company strategies and their implementation, and managing the legal function. She works collaboratively with management and staff to devise solutions to ensure that the company adheres to complex tax laws. In addition, Muirhead acts as the chief compliance officer of The Conference Board and is responsible for the organization’s global legal compliance, including devising and implementing policies to mitigate risk, developing staff policies and training in areas that touch on law and compliance, and developing and monitoring corporate governance and compliance policies and procedures.
As corporate secretary to the board of trustees of The Conference Board, Muirhead is the primary legal advisor to the board. She ensures board adherence to best practices in corporate governance, oversight, compliance, and risk management.
Muirhead joined The Conference Board in 1998 as a senior research associate and cofounded the webcast program in 2002. In 2006, she was promoted to associate director of research working groups. During her career at The Conference Board, Muirhead has identified, developed, managed, and executed critical management research projects in ethics and compliance, marketing and finance, corporate citizenship and sustainability, and human capital.
Before joining The Conference Board, Muirhead was an attorney in private practice specializing in corporate and securities law, and she represented underwriters and companies in initial public offerings and other securities related matters. Muirhead is licensed to practice law in the state of New York and is a member of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York, the New York State Bar Association, the Society of Corporate Secretaries & Governance Professionals, and the Association of Corporate Counsel, where she is also a member of its New York Women’s Group Steering Committee. Muirhead is a member of the board of trustees of The Hunter College Foundation (where she sits on its Audit Committee), and a director of the HCF Renovation Foundation. She received a JD from Harvard Law School and a BA magna cum laude in political science from Hunter College.
