Dr. Robert Hurley is a Professor at Fordham University and has been recognized by the student body for his excellence in teaching with the Gladys and Henry Crown Award for faculty excellence. Robert is considered an expert on how to build and repair trust with people, groups, organizations and large-scale systems. His work on trust has appeared in the Harvard Business Review, MIT Sloan Management Review, The Wall Street Journal, and the Financial Times. Roderick Kramer (Stanford) suggested that Robert’s book The Decision to Trust is the book to read on how leaders can manage to create high trust organizations. Bill George (Harvard and former CEO of Medtronic) called the book brilliant and remarkable. The book won the Alpha Sigma Nu national book award and was named one of the best leadership books of 2011 by the Washington Post. Robert’s research on trust is widely cited and has been translated for use around the world. He has written two book chapters on trust in the financial system (Oxford University Press and Edward Elgar). In total Robert has published over 30 articles and book chapters.
In addition to teaching graduate and undergraduate students at Fordham, Robert has taught executives for 25 years. He has been a core faculty member in Columbia Business School's High Impact Leadership Program for the past 25 years where he consistently is rated as a top faculty member. For three years Robert was one of the most sought after executive education faculty at Duke Corporate Education helping to design and lead programs for BAE Systems, Merck, Home Depot, and The Nature Conservancy. Earlier in his career he was a Product Manager at Kraft Foods. He began his career as a CPA working for Ernst and Whinney and Arthur Andersen where he consulted with large- and medium-sized companies in the financial area.
Robert's consulting experience has included work on innovation with NASA and managing change and executive development with Avon Products, First Tennessee Bank, IBM, Merrill Lynch, Citibank, Kraft Foods, Kinkos, Mercedes Benz, Sheetz Convenience Stores and State Farm Insurance. His teaching and consulting has included work in India, United Kingdom, Poland, Portugal, Italy, Japan, China, Switzerland, Hong Kong, Australia, France, and the United States.
Robert has a B.S. from Fordham University and M.B.A. from the Wharton School. While at Wharton he served as a Senior Consultant at the Wharton Entrepreneurial Center. Robert received his doctorate from Columbia University.
