Kenneth J. Tierney is the Group Vice President Safety, Health, Environmental, Community Relations and Sustainability (SHECS) at Sims Metal Management reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer. Sims Metal Management, with 2015 sales of $6 billion and over 6,000 employees is one of the world’s largest publicly traded metal recyclers with over 200 facilities and operations in 20 countries. The principle activities of the Company are the buying, processing and selling of ferrous and non-ferrous recycled metals; and the provision of environmentally responsible solutions for the disposal of post-consumer electronic products, including IT assets recycled for commercial customers. Sims Metal Management global headquarters is in Manhattan, NY.
In this role, Tierney is responsible for developing and executing Sims Metal Management enterprise SHECS vision and strategy. As chair of the SHECS Leadership Council and Sustainability Council, he leads key strategic initiatives for environmental, health, safety, compliance, energy, auditing and sustainability. Tierney is responsible for facilitating strategic direction and goal setting, execution of operational improvement programs, and analysis of key performance indicators. Tierney serves as the key reporting liaison for SHECS performance metrics and reports quarterly to the Sims Metal Management Board of Directors.
Prior to joining Sims Metal Management, Ken was Vice President of Environmental, Health, Safety and Sustainability at Raytheon Company. Raytheon Company, with 2013 sales of $24 billion and 63,000 employees worldwide, is a technology and innovation leader specializing in defense, security and civil markets throughout the world. Under his direction, Raytheon has become a leader in all aspects of EHSS management, earning numerous recognition awards from organizations such as the Aerospace Industry Association, National Safety Council, OSHA, Environmental Protection Agency and other government and industry groups. Raytheon is recognized as one of America’s safest companies.
Ken is a graduate of the University of Kansas and holds an M.S. degree in Civil Engineering from Tufts University and an MBA from the University of Massachusetts.
