Lockheed Martin

Matthew Swibel has worked every facet of the sustainability and communications profession over a 16-year career, from award-winning journalist to lead communicator for a 6,000-employee segment of a Fortune 60 company to founding director of a forerunning corporate sustainability team. Along the way, he has earned a reputation as a trusted business strategist and advisor to senior leaders—someone who can both shape strategic objectives and execute the tactics successfully.

In Matt’s current role, he directs sustainability strategy, reporting and stakeholder engagement at Lockheed Martin Corporation, which now is listed on the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index; recognized as the top sector performer according to the MSCI Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) index; and is among the top ten companies named to CR Magazine's 100 Best Corporate Citizens list.
He leads Lockheed Martin's sustainability stakeholder outreach to investors, federal customers and civil society, which informed the company’s—and the Aerospace & Defense industry’s—first GRI G4 report in 2014. Through Matt’s effective collaboration with business leaders, Lockheed Martin has increased its social impact by 50%, initiated a plan to quadruple on-site renewable power generation, introduced a globally-recognized supplier code of conduct and created its “Engineering a Better Tomorrow” brand promise.

From 2008 to 2012, Matt was Director of Enterprise Communications, where he led a team supporting the CFO, Executive Office of the Chairman and other corporate officers. In this role, he developed and planned multiple aspects of integrated communications including employee and supplier engagement, advertising, investor and media outreach, and executive speechwriting.

Matt spent almost a decade as a journalist, most recently as Associate Editor of Forbes, where he co-edited the World Billionaires issue and was recognized by the Overseas Press Club for his business reporting from abroad. Prior to Forbes, he was a staff reporter at Washington Business Journal, where his coverage of marketing and web-based political fundraising each earned Maryland-DC-Delaware and Virginia Press Association awards. He taught as an adjunct professional lecturer at American University’s School of Communication from 2005 to 2008.

Matt graduated cum laude from American University (DC) with degrees in Communications and Sociology and earned an M.B.A. from the University of Maryland Smith School of Business.  Matt serves as an independent director of Cornerstone Capital Inc. and an advisory board member of the University of Cambridge (UK) Centre for Risk Studies.
