Michelle Shumate is an associate professor in the department of communication studies at Northwestern University and the director of the Network for Nonprofit and Social Impact at Northwestern. She received her Ph.D. from the Annenberg School of Communication at the University of Southern California. Shumate has published or presented over 40 research papers dealing with communication and organizing. Her research has been published in Human Communication Research, the Journal of Computer Mediated Communication, Management Communication Quarterly, and the Journal of Communication. She was awarded a National Science Foundation CAREER award and a Beckman Fellowship at the Center for Advanced Study at the University of Illinois. In addition, Shumate’s forthcoming work on social entrepreneurs and their networks was funded by the Academy of Entrepreneurial Leadership at the University of Illinois. She has served on the editorial boards of the Journal of Applied Communication Research, the Journal of Communication, Management Communication Quarterly, and the Journal of International and Intercultural Communication.
