Managing an Aging Workforce in the Nonprofit Sector

Baby-boomer retirements, projected to begin at the end of this decade, are already raising concerns in the private and public sectors. They will likely have a significant impact on the nonprofit sector as well, and many nonprofits in sectors such as health care are already feeling the impact of talent shortages. Within the next five years, executive turnover will affect a significant number of nonprofit organizations.

The anticipated labor shortages and leadership transition will occur at a critical time for nonprofits, especially as board members are holding them more accountable. Consolidation and growth have led to larger organizations that often require more management talent. Meanwhile, nonprofits must nurture the next generation of leaders and transfer tacit knowledge and organizational practices from older to younger employees.

The Conference Board® Research Working Group on Managing an Aging Workforce in the Nonprofit Sector will address challenges related to aging and a multigenerational workforce that could have a tremendous impact on the stability, growth and potential of the nonprofit sector in the coming years. We invite you to join this unique working group which will focus on:

  • Tapping new sources of talent and volunteers
  • Recruiting and retaining staff with needed skills and expertise
  • Managing executive turnover and transition
  • Keeping institutional intelligence
  • Building intergenerational trust and teamwork

This new working group is designed for nonprofit organizations that have not yet faced the challenges of a maturing workforce, as well as those currently dealing with these issues. In a series of face-to-face and online meetings, you will work with experts and other nonprofit leaders in a confidential environment to elucidate these challenges and identify practical solutions.
