Strategic Workforce Planning in Global Organizations

Strategic workforce planning (SWP) is a relatively new capability. Most large companies describe themselves as "just getting started." From two previous research working groups on SWP, recent company inquiries, and 30+ presentations on SWP at TCB conferences, councils, and regional briefings, we know that companies typically face challenges in regards to strategic workforce planning. These challenges include: recognition by business leaders on the value of SWP; establishment of credible workforce data that is accepted company-wide; development of advanced analytics or metrics that reveal important relationships; and the training and coaching of HR Business Partners to become effective facilitators of SWP discussions.

  • David Learmond, Research Working Group Leaders, Executive Fellow and Program Director for The Conference Board, Europe & Asia-Pacific. Previously, he was the Senior Vice President and HR Director for Unilever China. He is now based in Edinburgh, Scotland, where he is a Principal Industrial Fellow at the University of Cambridge.
  • Mary Young, Senior Research Associate, The Conference Board, has been at the forefront of TCB's two prior RWGs on SWP and is one of the preeminent experts on the topic. She will provide continuity in the research as we look at SWP in the global context.

Research Methodology

  • This research will build on TCB's previous SWP research and the insights gained from more than 50 previous RWG companies and more than 30 global companies interviewed by TCB researchers.
  • The important new element of this next stage of TCB's SWP research is a focus on the challenges of planning, shaping, and managing a global workforce.
  • Based on the needs of the member companies, we will design and conduct our global SWP research to answer RWG members' most pressing global SWP challenges.
  • Members will gain exposure to each others' workforce planning strategies and gain access to experts on the issue.

End of Group Deliverables

  • A research report, which members will receive in advance of the wider business community.
  • The ongoing dialogue between the researchers and the members ensures that the results are closely aligned with the members' immediate and practical needs.
  • Interaction with leading thinkers on this topic to help shape workforce planning.
