No longer a "nice to have" mathematical exercise, workforce planning has become a critical element of the business strategy. In today's strategy session, the workforce planning conversation between the HR generalist and the business leader must be a top priority. It exposes both possible risks from insufficient capabilities and potential existing strengths that can be leveraged for even greater impact. When executed properly, it can help drive new markets, more efficient organizational structures and better margins. Making the transition from "nice to have" to "strategic" can be challenging. There are a variety of approaches one can take: from in-depth workforce analytics to focused efforts on key roles in specific business segments. Regardless of the approach, practitioners are finding the big challenges are in establishing accurate, consistent data company-wide, developing the right skill set within human resources, and demonstrating to business leaders what strategic workforce planning can do. To help your company's transition and further your understanding of the complexities of Strategic Workforce Planning, The Conference Board Implementing Strategic Workforce Planning Research Working Group will explore best practices through discussions, presentations, and member-guided research. This yearlong project will culminate in a published report of the group's findings to help others raise the quality of their own workforce planning efforts. Issues for discussion:
