Socio-Ecological Transitions and the Impact on Labour

This webcast is about the oncoming socio-ecological transition away from fossil fuels the world is inevitably faced with, and the transition’s impact on labour and employment against the background of what we can learn from historic and still ongoing energy transitions. It is part of a series and integral part of NEUJOBS, a European Commission FP7 financed consortium aimed at giving a comprehensive picture of the European labour markets in 2025.
Willi Haas from the Institute of Social Ecology, Vienna will present the ongoing Socio-ecological transition implications on labour, and will discuss with Tara Murphy, Program Director at The Conference Board and HR Business Consultant how these transitions will impact the way we work in the future. Pointing to the fact that market expectations shortens business horizon and planning horizon is mostly 3-5 years, she focuses on how to built bridges to these informed scenarios.
The focus of this webcast is therefore on how the 'historic' transition of the energy regime from an agrarian society towards an industrial society based on fossil fuels entailed dramatic and far-reaching changes for society as a whole and, in particular, for the organization of labour. This transition also generated major impacts on the global bio-geo-spherical cycles, most notably on the climate system, leading to a reduction in biodiversity and depletion of non-renewable resources. As major developing countries now also in this transition, the global trend of resource use is becoming not only unsustainable but non-viable, and we will have, or are already in a “new” transition away from fossil energy and probably away from the familiar energy-abundant type of society. Labour was fundamentally transformed by the “historic” transition of the energy regime, and will be equally affected by this next transition exceeding anything that can be captured by the notion of 'green jobs'.
