LGBT in the Work Place: What's New, What's Changed? (Part 1)
Join a high-level conversation with fellow industry leaders and experts from The Conference Board to address emerging business issues identified by our members. Since LGBT initiatives were introduced into the workplace more than a decade ago, organizations have made significant progress at creating more inclusive environments for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered employees. Today 85% of Fortune 500 companies have protective policies to address sexual orientation. Yet, attitudes remain complicated and as LGBT spreads to other countries, additional cultural and legal issues arise. Employee engagement is an important to achieving increased productivity and growth.
In the marketplace, recent estimates put suggest that LGBT buying power could be as high as $700B in the US alone. Organizations are focusing on how best to tap the LGBT market and build loyalty with this group of consumers.

As we have seen with other underrepresented groups in the workplace, the involvement of the members of the majority populations is an important component in making change happen. LGBT leaders and staff need the support of straight allies to assist with opening the dialogue and moving toward a more open and inclusive workplace.
For LGBT staff leaders and staff to feel engaged and comfortable, they need to be able to bring their “whole self” to work. Straight allies are key to creating an environment where LGBT staff and leaders can thrive
