Longstanding trends in the global economy have come into even sharper focus since the economic turmoil of the past few years.  Emerging markets will continue to expand at rates that are far higher than mature economies and are accelerating their movement toward peer status.  Unemployment rates in the US and Europe will not recover quickly and downward pressure on wages will continue for the foreseeable future, while wages and standards of living in emerging economies are on the rise, beginning to erase much of the supply of inexpensive labor. Demographic issues of aging workforces, the battle for talent, and workforce mobility are major concerns as global companies assess their needs and develop strategies.

How are these tectonic shifts changing the role of HR in global companies?  What are the implications the practice of HR in major areas, including

  • Employee engagement
  • Talent quality, sourcing and retention across geographies and functions
  • Pressure to improve productivity and foster innovation
  • Cost control across a wide range of areas.

This 2-part KnowlEdge Series will explore the macro trends that are transforming the business environment in both mature and emerging markets and how HR leaders in two global companies, in different sectors, are responding to these new challenges.
