The 2007 Institutional Investment Report

This report is widely regarded as the most definitive source of information on U.S. institutional investor ownership and control. Dr. Brancato developed this series of data in 1988 and has periodically updated these data in order to track the influence major categories of institutional investors have on U.S. equity markets and on the ownership structure of U.S. corporations. The data define institutional investors as comprising the following categories of investors: public (primarily state and local) and private (primarily corporate) pension funds; investment companies, including open-end and closed-end mutual funds; insurance companies (life and property and casualty); bank and trust companies; and foundations. A relatively new group of investors representing pools of money referred to as hedge funds are not specifically segregated from these categories, as for example, certain pension funds and mutual funds invest in hedge funds. The Conference Board Governance Center will be undertaking separate analyses on hedge funds and their influence in the markets.
