We’re all being asked to do more with less in this business climate, ominously labeled “the new normal.” The people, budgets, and even timeframes upon which we once relied are no longer there, replaced with the urgent exhortation to be more efficient with the scarce resources we still have, or else. This may strike us as a seemingly impossible contradiction—higher expectations against a backdrop of less means to accomplish them—but it’s really a blessing in disguise. Constraints define us, like a riverbed following the underlying topography of the landscape. We do our best work when under our tightest constraints. Faced with externally imposed limits on people, money, and time, we must rely on something we have an unlimited supply of: our own ingenuity.
