The 2009 Corporate Contributions Report

Responses to this year's edition of The Conference Board Annual Survey on Corporate Contributions indicate that for companies for which we have multi-year data, U.S. charitable giving declined in FY 2008, while international giving increased. Among the 166 companies that participated in the survey, total contributions of $9.47 billion were distributed to recipients in the United States and overseas in 2008, as compared to $10.97 billion in 2007. Other key findings include:

  • Pharmaceutical companies remain the top donor industry in the United States.

  • U.S. contributions totaled $6.88 billion in 2008, with a median contributions budget of $12.51 million.

  • For the overall survey sample, total international contributions increased from $2.35 billion in 2007 to $2.59 billion in 2008. The majority of international contributions (79.67 percent) were non-cash.

  • Health and human services organizations received the largest share of corporate support, both in the United States and internationally; however, U.S. contributions to health and humans services organizations decreased in 2008.
